The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan pg 1-92

Summary

Percy Jackson is a twelve year old boy who is attending Yancy Academy, aprivate school in upstate New York. Percy is a troubled boy who has been kicked out of six schools in the last six years, and is on the path of getting kicked out of Yancy Academy. During a field trip to a museum, Percy gets introuble by his pre-algebra teacher Mrs. Dodds who has always seemed to have it out for him. When Mrs Dodds takes Percy into a empty part of the musem she starts acting very strange and says to him "It was only a matter of time before we found you out. Confess and you will suffer less pain"( Riordan 12) Not having a clue of what she is talking about, Percy finds himself being attacked by Mrs. Dodds who has turned into a monster with bat wings and yellow fangs. While she attacks, Percey's favorite teacher at Yancy Academy, Mr Brunner tossed Percey a pen which turnned into a sword that he then used to kill Mrs. Dodds and she exploded into yellow powder. After the attack, Percy finds that everyone is acting like everything is normal. Even that Mrs. Dodds never existed and that a tacher Mrs. Kerr has been thier pre-algebra teacher the whole year.
The school year is coming to a close and Percy is on the verge of being kicked out of school again. Before finals, Percy makes an attempt to talk with Mr. Brunner about the Latin final only because Mr. Brunner is his favorite teacher. When he goes to Mr. Brunner's class room, he hears Mr. Brunner and Grover talking about him, and how people have found Percy and are trying to kill him.
At the end of the school year, everyone is going back home and Percy and Grover end up taking the same bus back to New York City. When they reach the city Percy decides to ditch Grover because he was acting very strange as if something bad was going to happen. When Percy finally reaches home, Percy's stepfather, Gabe, is introduced into the story. Gabe is described as a deadbeat stepfather, and Percy does not know why his mother married him. As Percy's mother comes home and gives her son a loving welcome back, she tells him that they will be going to Montauk beach, just the two of them. While at the beach in their cabin, Grover shows up unexpectedley and right away Percy's mother new something was wrong. After she rushes both of the boys into the car, they start driving to a place where Percy's real father said he should go, but Percy's mother was ever able to let him go because she might not ever see him again.
On the way, the three find themselves attack by monsters again, and Percy finds himslef in a battle with his life against Minotaur, half man and half bull. Percy wins the victory but not after Minotaur killed Percy's mother. After going unconscious from the fight with Minotaur Jerry finds himself at a camp ground known as Camp Half Blood. He soon finds out that the camp is a special camp where only half god, half humans, who are all children of ancient Greek Gods come to stay because monsters will challenge them to fights if they are not on the campground. Percy comes to find out that Grover is a satyr(half human, half goat), Mr. Brunner is Chiron the centaur(half human, half horse). Percy also meets Dionysus God of Wine, and a long time camper, Annabeth, daughter of the Goddess Athena.

Quote

"...her face deathly pale in the flashes of lightning. She grabbed her purse, tossed me my rain jacket, ans said "Get to the car. Both of you. Go!"(Riordan 43)

Reaction

As shown in the quote, Rick Riordan uses good adjectives to describe the picture of the story, and incorporates suspense when he is forshadowing to give a sence of whats going to happen next. Riordan also does a great job of incorporating ancient Greek history into the story, and ties the history with his fictional story line which makes the story more interesting.
